Boston GAA Opening Day

Sheenan Cup
The days events began with The Sheenan Hurling Cup Final between Tipperary and Wexford. Following a heavy rain which delayed the start of the Sheenan Final, the grass took on enough water to make the activities on it slightly slippery.

Weather wise Sunday started out to be a perfect day for both codes with temperatures reaching the early 80’s. A brief shower didn’t deter starting time by too much in the Sheenan Cup but that wasn’t to last as a severe Thunderstorm closed in after ten minutes in the Armagh Christophers Football Championship opener. It was then decided , in the interest of safety, to cancel the remaining two matches and reschedule them until during the week. The field itself looked in tip top shape ,it was unfortunate on all involved .
A second minute free for Wexford on the 60 yard line is taken short and worked all the way into within fourteen yards of the goal . The goalkeeper was in a steady enough position to make an easy enough save. Wexford’s back line spent the opening ten or so minutes constantly exposed by Tipperary’s forwards who seemed to have no trouble getting in behind them. The result was a first point for Tipp after 7 minutes. Tipp’s Midfield duo excelled in controlling the middle of the field for long patches throughout. On six minutes, Tipperary dropped a 65 directly into the Wexford square but Wexford’s eyes were open and their backline began to show some more togetherness as a unit. It was an opportunity that Tipp will see as a golden chance for a goal, and one that Wexford will thank their goalkeeper for helping avoid. The same goalkeeper who shone between the posts on a number of ocassion’s throughout. Tipp will almost certainly address the amount of wides they had in the first half, wide’s that most would consider to be quality scoring chances. Tipperary showed good vision in making space for themselves while Wexford, for a time ,seemed to struggle to find their men. But the Tipp Manager , LiamTuohy, was under no illusions at half time as to who were the team to beat in Boston Hurling. He did rightfully praise his Midfield but realized that there were some areas on the field who would take on closer attention in the future if this team is to develop further. They certainly have the talent to do so. Just before half time Wexford composed themselves a lot better than at the start of the match and by the half they looked like they would just pip the post in today’s proceedings. Half time in a low scoring , but well disciplined ,game stood at 3 points to 2 in Wexford’s favor. For all of the frees that Tipp were awarded and the resulting opportunities they put wide, they must feel the result at the half was justified.

It took Tipperary no time at all in the second half to improve their defending. A very close knit back line emerged and one could see and hear the communication between players. Wexford struggled in the back line again for one spell but reliably cleared the ball to safety until the bounce of the sliotar landed favorably for Tipp and they capitalized on it. The marking was evidently tighter in the second half also but some fitness levels would have been questionable. As the opportunities came for Tipp so did the wide’s, 9 in all, 5 of them from frees. Wexford played a calm and collect second half. It didn’t take too much to see that they do have good communication , it might just be the case that they need to shake off the preseason cobwebs before it all gels together for them. They continued to battle for their well taken scores to bring a deserved result of Wexford 8 points Tipperary 5.
