Wex In Rebels Ears

Wexford 5-08 Cork 1-11

By Nollaig Beneid

Wexford/Cork Captains

Following an opening of tit-for-tat points, champions Wexford sent a clear message to Cork with a goal after five minutes from a free on the edge of the area. It was evident early on that both teams had improved since their last outings. The score of the game came from Cork’s number 27 ten minutes in when he pointed from play 65 yards out. Wexford capitalized on a nice ball in from their very reliable half back line to take their second goal and move further away from Cork. Wexford’s six point lead fifteen minutes in looked like sticking but Cork worked hard attempting to stay with the run of play and managed to scrape back three points with no answer leaving them only one in arrears at the half. Wexford 2-06 Cork 0-08.
A free from Tony Murphy was saved by Cork on the line in the opening seconds of the second period. Following on from that the tables reversed when Cork converted a free at the other end of the field. Wexford’s Tom Moloney scored easily from play to maintain his sides lead. Marking was sufficient from both teams to make for a low scoring match.
Goals proved elusive for Cork at this point mainly due to the very efficient operations of the Wexford defense. Twenty minutes into the second half Wexford took their third goal to extend their lead by 7 points. Cork forwards found it hard to capitalize on any of their possibilities until an opportunity for goal was seized after Wexford were caught sleeping on their own 14 yard line. This score brought Cork some momentum but the lead was too far off for anything except a miracle to cure. Wexford always looked like a team who played not just to win but to win absolute ! This they did with a certain amount of ease against at The Rebels expense. Cork’s moments of complete possession were rare in this match but one wonders if Cork could have taken advantage of them anyway. Wexford surely were in a class of their own today.

Warm up for the Gaels

Warm up time for Gaels'

Gaels’ opened the scoring account today in what looked to be an enticing encounter. Michael McGill pointed from play for Gaels and literally seconds later Mark Kelly added to Gaels’ tally. Armagh’s Dominic Magill will be unhappy with his wide attempt from 20 yards out minutes later. It has to be said that Gaels stamped their authority on this particular match from the beginning. They played very attractive flowing football, making space for themselves and generally looking ‘together’ as a team on the field.
Armagh looked to have some difficulty getting out of the starting gate ten minutes in until Dominic Magill redeemed himself with a fine point from play. He was answered straight back when Gaels’ did the same at the other end of the field. Not an overly ‘tough’ matchup should have begun to go Armagh’s way when a finely fielded ball by Darren Maguire was squandered following his pass. Fergal McClelland concurred and brought up the green flag after a nicely tapped effort beat the Gaels’ keeper to level the score.
A reward for Thomas McDonagh’s hard work was also around the corner for Gaels’ after he goaled on 20 minutes after finding himself on the end of a fine move by his colleagues. Not satisfied with his team mates efforts Mark Kelly got in on the action with another goal from the kick out for Gaels putting them 5 points ahead in as many minutes.
Armagh worked away in spurts but the rewards didn’t come frequently enough and they only managed one point before the break. Gales’ work rate increased and they were a constant threat to Armagh’s defence time after time. At the break they lead Armagh by six points. It remained to be seen whether Armagh could play themselves back into contention. Sean Mc Corry welcomed the start of the second half with his teams first yellow card after an unruly tackle on his counterpart. Armagh will be pleased with the efforts of Darren Maguire despite the result.
Gaels are a team who understand each other , it wouldn’t take a genius to see that they probably spend a lot of time in training working on their passing routines. After seventeen minutes of the second had elapsed Gaels’ were surely set for success with a 10 point lead. At this stage Armagh did not look like they could reel in any degree of pride until Darren Gilsenan caught a high ball into his waist , turned and goaled with his first touch. Gaels’ were not about to panic and they stuck to the mission at hand by replying yet again with a converted score from play, it seemed as though their whole team had a part to play in it, that’s because they did. The scores kept coming for Connamara and they ran out comfortable winners, not needing the goal that came from Kieran Cox with minutes left. Kieran’s well taken goal effectively ended any comeback from Armagh.
Man of the match ; Kieran Cox(Gaels)

Tones plot Mac's downfall

Any aspirations Mac’s had of taking over this Junior ‘A’ encounter were swiftly dealt a blow by the Tones three minutes in when they goaled unexpectedly. At that stage the answer didn’t look obvious for Mac’s. They took a bit of time to find their form but it came together when Benny McGettigan’s second tip at the ball ended up in the net. Both teams showed decent composure and no quarter was given in the first fifteen minutes.
The scores came slowly thereafter all due to the intensity from each team. Mac’s pulled ahead after fifteen minutes with three unanswered points in succession. Tones’ Denis Newman will feel hard done by after his effort for goal literally got ‘stuck in the mud’. Paddy McCusker worked hard for Mac’s throughout. Gary Hennessy’s contribution was worthy.
The first half won’t be remembered for it’s prolific scoring. Both teams had their share of wides, something that both managements' will have concerns about. The first half finished Mac’s 1-03 to Tones’ 1-01.
Tones number 20 opened his sides tally in the second half with a well taken point from play. Seconds later Tones’ worked a ball through to goal. The tide had turned in their favor.
A wide from Mac’s Eoin McCusker minutes later expressed his teams frustration. They weren’t alone, Tones also squandered a scoring chance when a 21 yard free veered wide.
Truth be told, this match didn’t take on the flavor which, on paper, it probably should have. That said there were bursts of talent on both sides, some very good marking and a lot of running off the ball. What brought the game down as a spectacle was the amount of wides and the general waste of possession while in a scoring postition.
The game leveled twice in the second half as each team slowly and with a little more flair took their scores. Marking from both teams improved in the second period and a last effort by Macs to goal and put them one point ahead was defeated by Tones’ defense with two minutes to go. Tones’ added to their score sheet with a last minute point to give them a hard fought three point win.
Man of the match Danny Munnelly (Tones)
