The famous Artane Band, an integral part of Irish life since 1872 have announced details of their forthcoming tour of Massachusetts which will take place from August 27 to September 4. 2009

Joe Edge, Administrator of the band said that the 62 young musicians are really looking forward to the tour. “The Artane band is an integral part of that most special of days in Ireland, the GAA all Ireland finals, and the opportunity to bring a part of this uniquely Irish event to Boston during the 125th anniversary celebrations of the GAA and 50th Anniversary of the founding of the North American Board is an honor for all associated with Artane.

Ronan O’Reilly, Musical Director of the band spoke about the events the band will undertake.
“Although we are famous for our performances in Croke Park, we perform at many concerts during our year. The chance to play at the historical Faneuil Hall, and at the Hanover Theatre in Worcester, will allow us to demonstrate the skills of our members, who range in age from 12 to 17 in a setting that will be a surprise to many.”

Tony Doherty, tour manager was equally enthusiastic. “We are very grateful to Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray, and to Mr. Chris Cook from the Mayor’s office for their kind invitation to perform. Along with the kindness of the Milton and Melrose Schools and the support of Bernie Connaughton from the GAA in Boston and Mike O’Connor, President of the Irish Cultural Centre, our members are going to have a wonderful opportunity to experience life in Massachusetts during our stay.”

On Thursday September 3rd. the Artane Band will perform a Gala concert at Milton High School to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Irish Cultural Centre of New England and the 50th Anniversary of the founding on the Gaelic Athletic Associations North American Board. You've seen them on a television parade before the GAA All-Ireland Finals in September from Croke Park, Dublin, Ireland. You've seen them perform the National Anthem at the World Cup Qualifier- Matches live from Croke Park. Now you have the chance to experience 'The Biggest Little Band in the World' live at Milton High School on Thursday September 3rd at 7pm, 2009. It's been 11 years since Artane Boy's Band visited The East Coast of the USA. Known since 2004 as the Artane Band, this premier, Irish Marching Band/Concert Band performs selections of music with a little something for everyone.
The concert will include many Irish standards including "Lord of the Dance" and "The Irish Washerwoman, The Rakes of Mallow" from the "Irish Suite" by Leroy Anderson. There will be audience sing-alongs with some county tunes from Ireland. Also in the program there will be music by classical composers such as Verdi & Dvorak, as well as music from Film and Stage with themes from "Superman" and "Pirates of the Caribbean." Selections from the musicals will include "Les Miserables," and "Phantom of the Opera." The concert will also feature music from the "The Blue and the Gray" a selection of songs from the Civil War, and of course, some Dixieland Jazz too. As you can see, there will be something for everyone young and old, Irish and American. The Artane Band will be joined by the Boston Police Gaelic Column for the Grand Finale. Don't miss it!
JOINING THE BAND……
Our own Pauline Wells will also perform at the concert and the band is delighted to welcome Pauline to the stage. Pauline’s sincere delivery of modern and traditional Irish ballads is the most perfect example of how beautiful Irish Melodies are passed from generation to generation and Pauline’s voice is rich, warm and authentic, delivering raw emotion while provoking in all of us our own stories and history.
The Boston Police Gaelic Column will also grace the stage once again at the Milton High School Auditorium to perform with the Artane Band, symbolizing for all of us the continued presence of our Irish heritage here in Milton.
